The History of Our Branch

The Sherman E. Stimley Blue Ridge Neighborhood Library is a tribute to one of the city's barrier-breaking African American lawyers. Mr. Stimley joined Vinson & Elkins as the firm's first African American associate and soon ventured out on his own and opened the city's first African American firm consulting exclusively in tax-exempt bond law. Houston Public Library knew Mr. Stimley as an advocate for libraries, named a branch for him after his death in 1997. Stimley-Blue Ridge opened to the public in 1999. The library services over 51,398 area population of people.
