Meeting Notes 5/19/18
We began the meeting at 9am with Trish serving as recorder.
News Drew shared
the news of the successful field trip last Wednesday with the Briargate second
graders and shared that we will have another from the third graders next Wednesday.
Drew also shared the positive outcomes of the outreach to Blue Ridge Elementary
on Friday.
Drew announced we will be receiving Trauma Informed Care
training in July, most likely the 20th which should help better
prepare us for the upcoming school year.
ASZ Questions This
brought up the question of what to do when a child is sick in the After School
Zone. Drew suggested the best first step is communication. Drew recommitted to
always communicating when he needed to leave and making sure at least one other
person was in the room or if not he would get Officer Williams, and he asked
staff to do the same. With another person in the room, we can rely on shared
knowledge like whether a child ate fried chicken and then ran in the hot sun,
or what a parent’s phone number is.
If we do find a child is ill, we contact a parent. If we
cannot contact a parent, we must contact nonemergency police or CPS. Even if we
contact nonemergency police, they will follow up with CPS which is why we put
so much emphasis on getting parent’s phone numbers last month and we will do
the same thing at the beginning of next school year. The last day of school is
the 31st so let’s hang in there.
Youth Meeting Updates
Summer Reading Prizes
for SRP should arrive by the 1st. We have been recommended to
premake buttons for the prizes and we will take a look at the setup when they
arrive to see if that will allow for enough choice in buttons for our kids. If
it does, we will premake buttons. Beanstack training is available on the
Training Portal now and logging time is easier this year. Kids read twenty
minutes a day in any intervals and then they log the day. Activities no longer
require codes! YAY! Parents just name the activity they attended and they can
log several of the same type.
Flip Kits Evelyn
requests sending the surveys back inside the flip kits when we send them to be
refurbished. Drew thinks this is the best way to do it and will post a reminder
on the blog about it. Patricia asked people to be careful not to overload the
hooks as it is already a poorly placed door. Drew suggested trying to suggest
Flip Kits to every parent checking out a picture book and Trish shared her
pitch which included letting them know about the free CMH tickets with the
survey.
Final Updates
The WIC clinic will be open Thursday and Friday over the
summer and will not be open any Saturdays in order to update the online system.
We have been given the go ahead to share the board books and flip kits with
babies during our story times as long as we let them know the WIC Clinic shared
them with us.
A final piece of good news. Mary Wagoner was so excited
about our concept of an outdoor After School Zone that she took notes and is
working on sharing the idea with all After School Zones and hopes to provide
them with jump ropes and other supplies. After School Zone never gets any
easier, but the outcomes do improve as we develop relations ships with the
kids. One piece of advice Drew wanted to leave everyone with is that when you
are having a tough day, try to remember a positive interaction you had with
every child in the ASZ that day. Some will be harder than others, while some
will surprise you when you realize that many of our kids give us nothing but
positive interactions and the ones that are the most challenging still have
their positive moments.
