Did you know?

In House circulation is LIVE! You can find it under "Mark Item Used" in the Special tab of Sirsi/Workflows. The daily process will be as follows

Put all In House items on the top shelf of the rolling cart marked "in house items" then at the top of the last hour, the person assigned to bookdrop/in house will process them by first discharging all the In House items and then using Mark Item Used for the In House statistics.

As a reminder items eligible for In House are:
 • Items pulled for reference assistance or programs.
 • Items pulled from displays or shelves and turned in at the customer service desk or placed at the end of shelves, on floors, tables or other fixtures for reshelving/interfiling by staff.

Items not approved for In House are:

Items found out of order on the shelves.
Items found misaligned (tipped up, tipped down, partially pulled out) on the shelves.
Items put on display that are not physically removed from the display and used by a customer.
Items pulled from bookdrops/book return.

Put more simply, if we pull it for a storytime or to help with a reference question and it is not checked out, we mark it in house. Anything we find anywhere but a display or shelved is considered In House. If you are ever unsure, feel free to ask for clarification.

In House statistics being more accurate is a big improvement for HPL because it will allow libraries that have a lot of internal circulation to be recognized even they happen to have less actual check outs. All library usage is a positive.

I wanted to add as a personal note that this is the culmination of something I asked if we could implement at a manager's meeting just over a year ago. While adding the Mark Item Used feature to Sirsi was as simple as a pressing a few buttons, the process of testing this at libraries of various sizes and circulation traffic took much longer, especially as many other projects are always running simultaneously.

As long as it took, I do consider this a very positive story and one that should continue to give us hope for improvement within the system. It took a lot of people to make this happen and I was not even the first one to ask to start using Sirsi for In House statistics. Sometimes it just takes someone asking again and the right team being in place to give it a try. I feel like we have the right team in place at Customer Experience now that there is no idea we should hesitate to suggest. If we think it will improve things for customers or staff, we can always ask if it can be done.

If you ever have an idea you would like me to pass along at a Manager's meeting or to Djuina, let me know and I will be glad to share my loud booming voice.

Thanks,
Drew
